The battle for the #1 position across all cricket formats is spiking between Virat Kohli and Steve Smith. However, it’s not about leading one format, it’s about being in the lead across all three formats.

Aaron Finch gives his opinion over which player between is better between Virat Kohli and Steve Smith

Almost everyone, fans and players, across the globe have given their opinion regarding this on-going debate. Now, during an interview with Sports Tak, Aaron Finch provides his opinion on the matter.

According to the Australian captain both players have immense talent and they show this on-field. Neither of the players can be easily intimidated and even when they have tough phases, they return to dominate. He takes Kohli’s example pointing to his weak performance in England against Anderson. Finch applauds the zest with which both players perform both in their home games as well as away games.

Finch chooses his best based on different formats

Aaron Finch takes a different approach to answering the question. He picks two different formats and picks one player over the other in those formats.

Coming to Test Cricket, he believes that Steve Smith holds an over others in this format. In fact, he used the term “unbelievable” referring to Smith’s performance in Test Cricket.

“I think Smith has an edge in Test cricket. Steve in Test cricket is unbelievable.”

On the other hand, Finch believes Virat Kohli holds the edge over Smith in T20. However, he believes this to be the case owing to the fact that Kohli has played more matches than Smith in this format. He does add that by the time the Indian skipper retires, he will have become one of the best players of all-time.

Finch compares Kohli to Sachin Tendulkar saying while Tendulkar used to chase runs and score centuries, Kohli’s approach to the same is nothing short of “extra-ordinary”.

“Sachin (Tendulkar) got more hundreds and more runs but the way Virat constructs run chases and the number of hundreds he has got in winning run chases is extra-ordinary. So, T20, Virat probably has the edge over Steve Smith and it is just because he has played a bit more cricket.”

He concludes with the thought that both Virat Kohli and Steve Smith are good picks for any team given the fact that they always do the job and put up a “bloody good” performance.
