Hardik Pandya is great player, even though it’s been a while since he has been on-field.
Ian Chappell believes that India must include Hardik Pandya in their national squad playing for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In his opinion, Pandya is the boosting factor that India needs to retain the trophy in Australia.
He emphasised on the importance an all-rounder fast bowler can play when it comes to playing in Australian conditions such as in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide. As per Chappell, Pandya will be come in handy for skipper Virat Kohli. This is when he wants to rotate his fast bowlers yet maintain the match’s competitiveness.
“It will help if Hardik Pandya is available. He gives India an extra bowling option to maintain the pressure when the leading fast bowlers need a rest.”
Next, Ian Chappell adds that if Pandya becomes a part of this squad, then it will help him build up overs. If he can build up overs for the three Tests will benefit him during the SCG match. Moreover, the team can include a second spinner if Pandya plays as the third seamer.
“This is Pandya’s chance to gradually build up overs in the three Tests before the SCG match, where he could act as the third seamer so that a second spinner can be included.”
Finally, he adds that if Pandya is put in number seven, then it will make putting Rishabh Pant as batsman-wicketkeeper six necessary.
On the other hand, Ian Chappell has opinions about the spinners as well. He is certain that selectors will have a tough time choosing between the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Kuldeep Yadav.
“Ashwin has a great overall record, but not so much in Australia.”
“Ravindra Jadeja’s all-round talents and improved bowling form make him a legitimate challenger.”
”Kuldeep Yadav’s wrist-spin is the biggest wicket-taking threat on Australian pitches.“
