Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni are two of the names that are on the lips every Indian cricket fan. They have broken records, created records, and continue to be the players with top-notch talent and skills on-field.
However, there was a time when Virat Kohli was not performing as one expects. The performance was poor enough for his career to end. It was MS Dhoni who backed the current Indian skipper. This security from the former skipper helped Kohli become the player he is today, at least this is what Gautam Gambhir believes.
It so happened that during India’s tour of England in 2004, Kohli managed to rack up only 134 runs in 10 innings. It was a disappointing performance from his end. However, Dhoni did not let Kohli take the fall and backed his skills. This worked as a catalyst and he put up some of the testers performances in the following Test series of India’s tour. As a result, he scored a stunning 692 runs against Australia later during the same year.
Both VVS Laxman and Gautam Gambhir agree that Dhoni’s toke of security massively helped Kohli make the comeback. Otherwise, that could have been the end of his career. Today, Virat Kohli is ruling across all three formats of cricket.
If we take a look at the current skipper’s statistics, then it is an impressive chart. He holds a record of 43 centuries in One Day Internationals. On the other hand, he has 27 centuries in Test Crickets. With 70 centuries in his International career so far, he currently sits third after Sachin Tendulkar with 100 centuries and Ricky Ponting with 71 centuries. In fact, there is an on-going debate about whether he will be able to break Sachin Tendulkar’s record or not.
Coming to his fifties, Kohli holds a record of 82 50’s in T20Is.
