“MS Dhoni is the Greatest Sportsmen in the Modern Era”, Quotes Gary Kirsten

Former Indian coach Gary Kirsten heaped praises on Indian legends Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, and MS Dhoni. He also named winning the ICC World Cup 2011 with India as his most cherished memory. Kirsten was the head coach of the Indian cricket team when they lifted the World Cup after a wait of 28 years in 2011. 

Recently in an interview, he discussed the behavior and qualities of the Indian players that make them stand out. Talking about the ‘God of cricket‘, Gary revealed that it is easy to coordinate with Sachin Tendulkar because of his good values. Kirsten also hailed Virat Kohli as one of the greatest players. 

Gary Kirsten told Times of India, “Sachin (Tendulkar) was easy to work with because he has such a strong value system as a person. Virat (Kohli) was potentially a great player in 2011 and he is one of the greatest now,”

When asked about his experience of coaching the Asian Giants, the former South African player said that it was one of the best privileges of his life. He added that he has great memories with the Indian team and will cherish those memories forever. 

“I loved coaching the Indian team. It was one of the best privileges of my life. It was a fantastic journey with the players and very fond memories of the World Cup. There were a lot of expectations from the players to win the World Cup and they handled it incredibly well.”, Kirsten revealed.

No one should dictate MS Dhoni: Gary Kirsten

Gary Kirsten has worked closely with the former Indian captain MS Dhoni. Dhoni was the captain of the 2011 World-Cup winning squad of India. Gary named Dhoni as one of the greatest sportsmen in the modern era. He also said that Mahi’s intelligence, power, calmness, and athleticism differentiates him from other cricketers. 

Kirsten quoted, “MS (Dhoni) is an incredible cricketer. Intelligence, calmness, power, athleticism, speed and a match-winner separate him from others and puts him amongst the greatest sportsmen in the modern era,”

MS last donned the Indian jersey against New Zealand in the semi-final match of World Cup 2019. Since then he has been absent from the Indian cricket team. As a result, many speculations and rumors are making rounds regarding his retirement from the game of cricket. For the same, Gary pointed out that MS Dhoni has done a lot for the Indian team and has the right to leave whenever he wants too. 

Gary opined, “He (Dhoni) has earned the right to leave the game on his own terms and no one should dictate to him when that time is.”
