Dustin Poirier faced the biggest loss of his career in UFC 242 when he failed to capture the undisputed lightweight title. After fighting his whole career in two different weight classes in UFC, Poirier finally got the opportunity to get his first undisputed UFC title. However, he failed victim to Khabib Nurmagomedov. Although Poirier had some good moments in that match, Nurmagomedov dominated him on the ground and won the fight via a rear-naked choke.

The big question that came out of the UFC 242 is what is next for the two fighters who were involved in the main event? Well, we already know that Tony Ferguson is more likely to fight next for the title shot. however, what is next for the former interim champion, Dustin Poirier?

It seems Poirier himself has an answer for that. In his recent tweet, Poirier called out the former featherweight and lightweight champion, Conor McGregor. Poirier and McGregor go way back to UFC 178, where McGregor knocked out Poirier in a featherweight fight. There was animosity between these two fighters as well as leading to the fight. Dustin Poirier said:

“I think me and Conor running it back makes a lot of sense at this point.”

Well, it’s hard to argue against that. As much as McGregor needs the rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov, that match doesn’t make sense at all at the moment. Also, it’s hard to say that McGregor deserves the rematch since he was beaten comprehensively in the first encounter. There are a few options such as Tony Ferguson or the winner of Cerrone vs Gaethje. However, Poirier rematch seems to be a right fight and a pretty winnable fight for McGregor when you compared it to a fight with Ferguson.

Although Conor McGregor called out Nurmagomedov after UFC 242 for the rematch, Nurmagomedov has denied fighting Conor again unless he wins a few matches to deserve the title shot. Well, a win against the former title contender, Dustin Poirier would certainly put a strong argument on the table for Conor vs Khabib rematch.
