REUTERS – Pace bowler Stuart Broad has gone top of the International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings after his brilliant display in England’s series-clinching victory against South Africa in Johannesburg on Saturday. Broad took six wickets for 17 runs in a devastating burst as England bowled the hosts out for 83 in their second innings. England then knocked off the victory target of 74 easily. Broad, 29, moved above Ravichandran Ashwin of India and South Africa’s Dale Steyn into top spot — the first time an English bowler has topped the ICC rankings since Steve Harmison in 2004. Australia’s Steve Smith leads the batting rankings although Joe Root moves up to second after his century for England. South Africa will lose their top-ranked status to India following the fourth test against England. They trail 2-0. (Reporting by Martyn Herman, editing by Pritha Sarkar)

Walking in to bat for the first time in international cricket at the age of 22, <strong>Joseph Edward Root</strong> or Joe Root had already showed signs of becoming a future great. Root was also very quickly tagged as the future captain of the national team. He rose among the ranks to become one of the best batsmen of his generation and was handed England captaincy at the age of 26 when Alastair Cook stepped down.

Joe Root was the 2014 Wisden Cricketer of the Year, and his records speak for himself.

Among the power hitters in the England limited overs side, Root might seem like a misfit with his grace and elegance, but he is one of the most important members of the team. He has maintained a decent strike rate playing the role of holding one end up while others go hard around him.

Joe root is very composed by nature and is not one for the controversies. But there was an occasion when Root imitated a mic drop to celebrate his century against India. But he later also admitted that it was the most embarrassing thing he has ever done on a cricket field.
