The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Starfield are two of the biggest games of 2023. These games have really set a standard for what fans should expect from their favorite franchises and developers.

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom breaks new ground with the kind of abilities it gives players. On the other hand, Starfield breaks through the bounds set by its spiritual predecessors, such as Skyrim and Fallout 4, by taking to the skies and allowing players to customize their ships in great detail. With all these features, one wonders how similar these two titles are.

Starfield is a game with a massive world to explore

In typical Bethesda RPG style, Starfield offers players a world to explore. To go where they want when they want and talk to whomever they want. This means players can be roaming around in the game doing side quests and hunting bounties for hours and hours without worrying a second about the main story.

Then there’s the ship customization feature. Players can be seen all over the internet designing their ships. This is not something just about anyone can go about doing, but once you get hold of the basics, you find yourself in possession of a ship that looks like a Batwing from The Flash.

Then there are the thousands of planets that one can explore. Land on planets you like, explore them, scan them for resources, and set up an outpost. Mine those resources and use them to get rich. This game is the ultimate power fantasy for people who love building things and reaping their rewards.

Seeing an outpost mining resources and sending them wherever you want is a pleasure. If you choose so, this could be the only thing you do in the game: explore planets, mine them, and earn a living by selling the mined resources to build even more outposts. That’s how a game that starts as an elaborate sci-fi adventure turns into a life sim.

This is the kind of freedom Starfield offers; it pushes players to go off-rails and encourages them to do what they want.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a game about raw heroism

Now, raw heroism might sound like some weird terminology that someone just came up with. While that may be true, this is exactly what the game is about. When players wake up as Link, they are asked to complete a bunch of puzzle-like challenges and are offered a new power upon completion of each challenge.

By the time they set off, they have everything they need to survive in Hyrule. With very powerful abilities, a new and improved tablet called Purah Pad to use as a map, and a world before them to explore, the players lack very little.

When compared to Starfield, its visuals are not that impressive. However, its art style makes it a more appealing title to some. Additionally, it is also a bit more innovative due to one small thing – an ability called Ultrahand.

Cut a tree, find a rock, attach them together, and you have a weird contraption that does nothing, but you are allowed to do it. Nothing stops you from doing it. This has allowed players to build numerous elaborate devices. People can be seen flying Tie Fighters from Star Wars as well as massive mechs.

The difference between these games lies in the rules. Players in Starfield can explore the world far and wide. But at some point, they have to come back to the main story and complete it.

Some people who play Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom have defeated the final boss and defeated it in 55 minutes and 23 seconds. This is an insane number, and this does not happen because people find exploits; it is somewhat possible because of the ground-breaking abilities the game gives its players.

And that’s why Starfield and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom are similar in a number of ways. But Ultrahand single-handedly diminishes any chance of them being called equals.
