Ever since the first Assassin’s Creed game came out, there has been one location players have wanted, Japan. After all, Japan was home to skilled warriors who prowled in the shadows as they took down their targets. Everyone knows about the ninjas, or as the Japanese would call it, the Shinobi.

Ubisoft finally granted players’ wishes, with a title set in feudal Japan slated for release in late 2024. Dubbed Assassin’s Creed Red, the game will take the setting to a place fans have been begging to see for years. What is set to make it an even sweeter deal is the return of a fan-favorite feature from the franchise last seen in Syndicate.

In a new update, reports revealed Assassin’s Creed Red will be having a male and a female protagonist. This is the return of the feature that had been missing from the series after Syndicate’s release. As fans may remember, Syndicate had twins, Jacob and Evie Frye as playable characters, each with their assortment of abilities and strategies.

It looks like the two main characters will be a samurai and a shinobi. The male samurai will be an African refugee, who  fans believe will be based on Yasuke. Yasuke was the first African samurai who served in the country during the 16th century. While there is no information about the Shinobi, what is known is that she will be more agile than the samurai. Based on the different styles of combat of the samurai and shinobi, fans have a general idea of what gameplay could be.

The samurai will see a lot more of the combat being brutish, while the shinobi look to focus more on the stealth aspect of things. This is in line with the way things worked with Jacob and Evie in Syndicate. Jacob had combat-based skills while Evie’s skill tree saw her excel with stealth.

Why does this work for fans?

The thing to understand about this feature is the diversity it provides in terms of gameplay. As players switch between each character, they need to create strategies based on the character they choose. Moreover, it also offers a chance to change things up in terms of gameplay. It was one of the things that felt repetitive in the RPG era of Assassin’s Creed. It seemed as if all players had to do was kill everyone in combat and proceed.

Besides, it gives a chance for players to play as two of the greatest warrior groups in the world, samurai and shinobi. Both will have unique approaches, meaning gameplay will have more variety and be more enjoyable. Players will be able to take the stealth route or go all out and destroy enemies! It certainly sounds an interesting addition to the game.
