God Of War Ragnarok might have failed to win the “Game of the Year” this year, but it won several other awards, and one was for the narrative. Santa Monica Studios never fails to impress the audience with the plots of every God of War game.

Even with God of War Ragnarok, the creators presented an incredible storyline. The plot of this Sony Exclusive took players on a roller coaster ride. And the ending quest left everyone with misty eyes. Undoubtedly, it was the perfect ending where Kratos and Atreus visited Surtr in Muspelheim to ask him to start Ragnarok and kill Odin.

But this was not always the true ending. Recently some files have been found in the game, revealing another ending that Santa Monica Studios initially planned for the game. It is no secret a game goes through significant changes during development, including the plot. So the storylines we play in games are not always what the scripts originally had.

The God of War Ragnarok ending no one knew about

In the original ending, Kratos and Atreus ask Surtr to start Ragnarok. But to do so, the Fire Giant needed to fuse with his wife, Sinmara, in the Spark of the World. The Fire Giant didn’t want to sacrifice his wife. Hence, Surtr asks Kratos to stab Sinmara’s heart in his chest with the Blades of Chaos that have Surtr’s flames.

In the deleted ending, they stab Surtr similarly to create Ragnarok. But it didn’t go as planned, and Atreus had to seek help from Sinmara. The Giantess was reluctant to help because of her loss. However, Atreus lies to her that Odin killed Surtr, resulting in Sinmara seeking revenge against the All-Father.

She fuses her and Surtr’s hearts to start Ragnarok again. It results in Odin’s death, but the Giantess also dies. In this ending, Kratos confronted his son about lying to Sinmara. But Atreus claimed what other option they had. In fact, Atreus did it to take vengeance for Brok’s death, making the young half-giant more similar to his father from older games.

After this ending, there was supposed to be a post-game mission where Kratos finds both Surtr and Sinmara’s hearts and places them at the Spark of the World. But Freya and Mimir warned Kratos it could resurrect Ragnarok, but he didn’t want to separate the couple’s hearts and reasoned to deal with Ragnarok if it occurs.

Why didn’t developers choose this ending?

This deleted ending sounds like a great conclusion, but there is no denial about it being way darker than the original. Further, it would ruin the entire character development arc that Atreus went through. We can see in the final product that Kratos didn’t want his son to seek vengeance as he once did.

If Kratos failed to keep his son away from vengeance, then the former God of War wouldn’t have accepted that he was wrong to ask Atreus to close his heart to everyone. It was one of the most wholesome scenes, which we got thanks to the final storyline that Santa Monica Studios chose.
