New leaks suggest PC Remaster for Golden Eye 007 is on its way

Developers Rare have split with publisher Nintendo and is now owned by Microsoft, and none of these brands holds the official James Bond game license. However, in January 2022, fans discovered a slew of official achievements for a GoldenEye 007 re-release, and industry insiders speculated that a release was near.

Achievements are now publicly viewable on the Xbox store. Furthermore, they have gotten multiple recent updates since they were revealed in January, and individuals appear to be unlocking them in some way — including at least one Rare employee, presumably on the development team.

The fact that this is all happening right before Summer Game Fest and the Xbox Showcase on June 12 seems unlikely to be a coincidence. In other words, James Bond may, very well, return.

Previous remasters of Golden Eye 007 and its legacy

GoldenEye 007 was reimagined for the Wii in 2010, and then on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 a year later.

Although this recreation of the GoldenEye plot was interesting in its own way, it sought to update the storyline to meet Daniel Craig’s Bond era. It received positive reviews, but it missed the charm of the original GoldenEye; whether it was the revamped levels or the more contemporary devices that didn’t quite land.

The era may be credited to a portion of GoldenEye 007’s important legacy. Shooters like Doom and Quake were popular on PC before GoldenEye. GoldenEye’s multiplayer feature foreshadowed what console shooters would become, especially as online multiplayer services like Xbox Live and PlayStation Network became popular.

The multiplayer in the early Halo games feels heavily influenced by GoldenEye. Although map verticality and the ability to leap did not exist in GoldenEye, Halo’s arcade-style gameplay and weaponry spread around the level were quite similar to GoldenEye. Halo 2 was essential in putting console shooters online, and GoldenEye’s remake would have followed suit.

So, do you think a Golden Eye 007 reboot might be on its way for PC? Let us know in the comments.
