In the world of gaming, Japanese Juggernaut Nintendo is a household name. Maker and publisher of iconic IPs such as Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and more, Nintendo has secured its place in gaming history thanks to its long existence in the business as well as the innovative mindset that they have toward their games.

But many die-hard fans of the company often ask, where did it all begin? Initially, Nintendo wasn’t a gaming company, it started its business as a playing cards manufacturer, then looking at the booming market of digital entertainment, the Japanese company diverted their eyes to the new scene. Nintendo’s very first game was an arcade game called, EVR Race.

In 1975, Nintendo introduced EVR Race, its first-ever ‘video game’. Unlike its contemporaries that relied on sprites, EVR Race employed the Electronic Video Recording System, a pioneering technology that predated the widespread use of VHS tapes.

EVR Race was an arcade game that simulated betting, captivating players with its unique concept. The game cabinet featured a mechanism that randomized pre-recorded Full Motion Video reels showcasing either a four-way horse race (the default setting) or a car race. Cabinet owners could even swap out the reels to offer different finishing orders, ensuring variety in gameplay.

Players would select a horse or car, insert a coin, and watch the chosen reel unfold. The player who bet on the winning horse would claim victory. While EVR Race’s Full Motion Video was an impressive gimmick, it limited player interaction compared to contemporary arcade games that utilized 4-bit graphics.

Is Nintendo Switch Slowly Turning Into a Retro Gaming Paradise?

Nevertheless, the popularity of EVR Race inspired Nintendo to explore further opportunities in the arcade game market. However, the challenges associated with maintaining and servicing arcade machines led the company to seek alternative avenues. This ultimately drove Nintendo to develop home consoles and games for them, setting the stage for their future success.
