Nintendo finally gave fans a much better look at their latest 2D Mario game, Super Mario Bros. Wonder. This happened during a recent direct that was held just to let Nintendo Switch owners know how cool this new game actually is. They showed a bunch of new and exciting features that would accompany this title.

While the showcase was going on as usual, some could not help but notice that the game was setting some new standards for the series, not unlike a very successful Zelda game that launched years ago!

Years ago, when the first Super Mario Bros. game launched for the Nintendo Entertainment System, there was no doubt it was a trailblazer. It literally hailed the comeback of the video game industry. Nintendo and Shigeru Miyamoto then worked hard to follow that game with numerous sequels.

One of those sequels was Super Mario World, which revolutionized the series back then. Eventually, the Nintendo DS was launched, and a New Super Mario Bros. was introduced. The game was a more modern take on the same old formula. And that started the New Super Mario Bros. series.

It came for Wii, and it came for Wii U and even Switch. 2D Mario needed an innovation, just like Breath of the Wild innovated on the same old formal of The Legend of Zelda series. The game gave fans the freedom to go anywhere, do anything, and even run and reach the end of the game without fighting any enemies in between.

It looks like Nintendo is Zelda: Breath of the Wild, like revolutionary ideas from Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Gone are the days of similar-looking New Super Mario titles. Brand new level-altering powers, and some unique pickups that even change the rules of the game.

Changing enemies, turning Mario into a goomba, and turning a 2D side scroller into an overhead puzzle game. Of course, Super Mario Bros. Wonder cannot give players the kind of freedom a 3D open-world game gives, but it still looks like players would have a lot of freedom in this title.
