Super Mario Bros. Wonder Opens at a Higher Metacritic Rating than Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

The gaming fest of 2023 just keeps on getting better. As we move to the last quarter of the year, eSports fanatics have a lot to look back to. The two most recent entries in the elite cluster Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder are currently under hot fan scrutiny. Well, amidst all the speculations around the close clash, critics have a clear winner! 

In a year of non-stop big launches, the challenge of satisfying critics along with hardcore fans has only increased as a challenge. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 being pitched as the biggest superhero game of all time potentially ticked every checklist for a perfect game criteria. Until now! Surprisingly, this latest entry to Mushroom Kingdom has added a twist in the tail changing all the perspectives towards Game of the Year!

Super Mario Bros. Wonder performs better than Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on Metacritic

The highly-awaited Super Mario entry is set to hit sales on October 20. Having a very close release date to the super-trending Spider-Man 2, a comparison seemed unavoidable. However, no one would have thought that the promising Mario installment would surpass the web-slinging action-packed Metaverse on the critic scale. The year 2023 keeps it on with the steak of surprises. 

According to Metacritic, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 scored a rating of 91 whereas Super Mario Bros. Wonder has just scored a phenomenal score of 94. It is important to note that while both the scores are a testimonial of a promising gaming experience, the Mushroom Kingdom has bagged an edge over the Spider-Verse.

The Metacritic scores are considered to be one of the most significant sources of parameters to break down a game’s potential in the industry. For example, the most celebrated games of the past few years Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Elden Ring both scored an exceptional 96 on the forum. Thus, 94 for Super Mario Bros. Wonder certainly helps the hype built around the game.

However, it will be interesting to see how the community reacts to the game post its launch. The buzz around Super Mario Bros. Wonder has been subjected to some claims of it being the best Mario game in recent times. Well, the critics seemed to have nodded in agreement.

Mario and friends have received an invitation to visit the Flower Kingdom from the charming Prince Florian.


During the Nintendo Direct, the playable characters for Super Mario Bros. Wonder were also revealed. In addition to the main character, players will also be able to control Yoshi, Nabbit, Peach, Daisy, two Toads, Luigi, and Toadette. This time, the creators decided against giving different characters different abilities.
