The Last of Us Lead Actor Bella Ramsey Had to Wear Chest Binders “Which Probably Isn’t Healthy” During the Shoots

The critically acclaimed and fan-favorite HBO Max show, based on Naughty Dog’s Magnum opus gaming series, The Last of Us, had a big toll on the cast. Especially Bella Ramsey, who has delivered a fantastic performance as the show’s lead character, Ellie. In a recent interview, she shared she had to bind her physical appearance to stay focused on the sets.
Bella shared her gender identity and how it influences her time during the shoots of the Last of Us. She revealed that she identifies herself as genderfluid and to play a feminine character such as Ellie, Bella had to physically construct herself in order to focus on her role.

Discussing her gender image in the industry, Bella said in an interview with GQ, “This is what bothers me more than pronouns: being called a ‘young woman’ or a ‘powerful young woman’, ‘young lady,’ but I’m just not.” Continuing to share her experience in the sets of The Last of Us, Bellas added, “Playing these more feminine characters is a chance to be something so opposite to myself, and it’s really fun.”

Despite a lot of controversies surrounding the second season of the show, which is supposed to be directly based on the second game in the series, Bella expressed a lot of excitement about it. As the second part of the game ponders upon the gender identity of Ellie and with that Storyline, Bella could be freer with her character.
Sharing her time in the set wearing a chest binder, Ramsey shared that chest binders, “Which probably isn’t healthy,” should be used very carefully. She advised everyone to “please bind safely”. While Bella was going through a lot on the sets of The Last of Us, she had a corner of comfort in her co-star Pedro Pascal.

She shared that throughout her journey in the first season, Pedro had been very supportive. Even though the journey wasn’t very easy for the young sensation, Bella Ramsey shared, “Season one really was the best year of my life.”
