The Prestigious Grammy Awards Will Finally Recognise Video Games With This New Category

The video game industry is on a huge winning streak, as several brands recognize its potential every day. Very recently, the Grammys have decided to adopt a new category to honor exceptional video game music compositions. The officials have added a total of five new categories this year.

Music has been an inevitable part of video games since the beginning. From trailers to in-game interactions, music defines a video game’s auditory potential. Now, the Grammy Awards have finally chosen to recognize the talent of video game music composers.

This is the first time that video game scores will get a dedicated category in a prestigious universal ceremony for music. As mentioned before, music plays a very important sensory role in interactive media. In fact, adding a special category to recognize video game music was a very important and applaudable step by the Recording Academy. Moreover, it is a huge feat for the video gaming industry!

The Grammy Awards will now recognize outstanding video game compositions

The special Grammy category for video games is called ‘Best Score Soundtrack For Video Games And Other Interactive Media’. As the name suggests, Grammy will recognize music from video games and other interactive media like video games.

The official description for the category says, “Best Score Soundtrack For Video Games And Other Interactive Media: Recognizes excellence in score soundtrack albums comprised predominantly of original scores and created specifically for, or as a companion to, a current video game or other interactive media released within the qualification period.

The first video game to bag a Grammy was, in fact, Civilization 4. To elaborate, the Grammys recognized Christopher Tin, a celebrated video game composer, for his composition in the game.

Back in April, the 64th Grammys had honored the 8-Bit Big Band under the category ‘Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella’ for covering a soundtrack from an evergreen Nintendo favorite, Kirby Super Star. In fact, the soundtrack of the name Meta Knight’s Revenge is actually based on the game, Revenge of Meta Knight, which is a part of the Kirby Super Star collection.

Now, we have a dedicated video game music category that will open vast opportunities for talented artists. Our first guess? God of War Ragnarok deserves a mention next year!

Alongside the category for video games, four more were added, namely Songwriter of the Year, Non-Classical, Best Alternative Music Performance, Best Americana Performance, and Best Spoken Word Poet. The new categories will prevail from 2023, the first instance being the 65th Grammy Awards.
