While this speculation remains in the air for now, for all the hyped fans, there are some really interesting tidbits about this upcoming game. So here are five fun facts every fan must know before they once again step into the gorgeous world of Hyrule.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom started life as a DLC for Breath of the Wild

The developers of Breath of the Wild planned to expand the game with more expansive DLC for that game. But eventually, as development progressed, the game got so huge that the developers decided to instead develop it as a sequel.

This is not a surprisingly new practice either; a number of developers do this. A while ago, Saints Row 4 started life as a DLC for Saints Row 3, but its scope made developers call it a sequel instead.

This is the only second direct sequel in the whole Legend of Zelda series

This series of action-adventure games have been coming out for the longest time now. But people might not be aware that with this series, Nintendo does not do sequels very regularly. The only sequel fans saw previously was Majora’s Mask, which was a direct follow-up to Ocarina of Time.

And now Tears of the Kingdom is a direct follow-up to Breath of the Wild. Some might not see it as much, but it is indeed a big deal!

This is the second game in the series to focus on the skies

Years ago, Nintendo Wii users got their hands on a game called The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. This game was literally set in a kingdom that was floating in the sky. Link traveled through those skies using a flying birdlike creature called Loftwing.

Currently, it’s unknown how players would travel through the skies in this upcoming game, but a flying realm does exist in its version of Hyrule.

Tears of the Kingdom is the 20th mainline entry in the series

It’s been a very long journey, spanning over 30 years. From the first Zelda title in 1986 to Tears of the Kingdom in 2023, Nintendo has hardly had a misfire. Most of these games have scored over 90 on Metacritic, and most of these games have their own huge fan following online.

Wind Waker has its fans; Twilight Princess has its own fans, and it keeps going. It’s not a small feat when a series stays so consistent after over 30 years since its inception.

This is Ganondorf’s fourth game where he appears as himself

Ganon is the primary antagonist of this series; he is not always seen in the games, but most of the time he is the one pulling the strings of evil. Before this, he only appeared in Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess in his true form.

Some would argue he was in Breath of the Wild too, but he was not in that game as himself; it was Calamity Ganon whom we fought at the end of the game, not Ganon himself.
