Starfield has finally launched for premium edition holders, and the game is getting a decent response from both fans and critics. It is evident from videos and reviews all over the internet that this game still has a bunch of bugs.

Still, the game is currently at the top of the list of most-played games on Steam. And yet, it failed to surpass Bethesda Softworks’ monumentally successful RPG, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. A game that launched in 2011.

It looks like it’s hard to topple Skyrim off its throne, even for Starfield!

Years ago, when Bethesda Softworks launched Skyrim, people were undoubtedly blown away. The reason was not its visuals or even its combat, but its world. A world with almost no boundaries, a world so full of surprises that fans could not stop exploring it.

It introduced a brand-new leveling system, and it gave players so many side quests to complete and so many NPCs to meet that they made people forget the main story. This is what fans expected from Starfield too—a world that is just as flawless to explore. Also, a world that is full of things to do. That’s why today in 2023, the PC version of Skyrim has a score of 96 on Metacritic.

Starfield also has an open world worth exploring; it even has that subtle music that makes you feel somehow connected to the game while exploring. But the biggest problem with this game is that it’s not 2011 anymore. Many reviewers and gamers have noticed the fact that the aesthetics of Starfield might be modern, but as a game, it’s stuck with Skyrim.

Despite the fact that Starfield is being called Bethesda’s most polished game yet, there are glitches. And those glitches are somewhat noticeable too. What was charming in 2011 is annoying in 2023. Bugs are not a feature anymore, and people do not have enough patience to wait for them to be fixed. Maybe that’s why Starfield’s Metacritic score is much lower at 88.

Why Bethesda should have done more with their latest RPG

The fact that Starfield is their latest game and that it’s their first next-generation title should have weighed heavily on them. They should have made this game representative of that fact. There’s no seamless space travel; the game is riddled with load screens, and there’s a lot of stuff missing from this game that we often see in modern games.

Stuff like better facial expressions, a more streamlined UI, and even a map. Here’s hoping Bethesda fixes this stuff in time. Even though this game is not Bethesda’s best, it sure is one of them.
