Ravichandran Ashwin has indeed come of his own. From a talented maverick with variations, he has become a quintessential asset to the Indian team .The Tamil Nadu offie did have great test series in India over the years, but came apart over a tough season of the tours of South Africa, New Zealand, England and Australia. He was nevertheless leased with life during the limited overs segments of the respective tours, and it literally kept him breathing. Ravichandran Ashwin, a graduate of SSN college of Engineering in Chennai, impressed time and again in the domestic circuit for Tamilnadu. Making his debut in 2006-07 season for the southern state, the off spinner has 134 wickets in 34 games for his state and  a doubly impressive 279 wickets in 63 first class games overall.

Ashwin was widely regarded as a genuine batsman for the Tamil Nadu side, he has amassed 2273 runs in his 63 first class games through his phenomenal career. It also includes 4 well crafted hundreds and 12 fifties. He regularly batted up the order for TamilNadu, even at the Ranji level. At the International level, Ashwin has proved himself time and again in test cricket. He has amassed 1103 runs in 28 tests, including 2 hundreds against the West Indies.

In March 2013, Ashwin made history. India had thumped Australia at the Feroz Shah Kotla, in the fourth and the final test of to take the Border Gavaskar trophy. They had demolished their opponents 4-0. Ravichandran Ashwin had a huge role to play in the triumph. His tally of 29 wickets put him in elite company with E Prasanna and Harbhajan singh as the only spinners to pick more than 25 wickets in a test series.

For a player like Ashwin, who made his way into the test side with an impressive performance in the shortest version of the game in the IPL, bowling under pressure almost suits his game. With 11 wickets in 6 outings in the ICC world T20 2014 in Bangladesh, Ashwin lead India to the tournament’s final.

The Stage was set for a big knock from Sachin Tendulkar at the Eden gardens on the occasion of his 199th test in November 2013, but the Indians found themselves in a spot of bother at 156/6 when Ashwin joined debutant Rohit Sharma out in the middle, and played a valiant knock of 124 in Rohit’s shadow to take India to a commanding total of 453 .They had made history. Their 260 run partnership for the 7th wicket  is the highest seventh wicket partnership for India in test matches.

India came from behind to beat island neighbours Sri Lanka in a historic test series win earlier this year, not before India’s premier spinner in Ashwin demolished any idea of a fairytale farewell for Sangakkara, dismissing him on every occasion throughout the series and hence making the task a lot easier for the Indians in the series win.

4. Fastest To 50 Wickets.

Ashwin proved his mettle big time, very early in his test career as he romped away to 50 test wickets in a measly 9 tests, ahead of the likes of Kumble, Harbhajan and E Prasanna. This incredible feat played a big part in shaping the spinner’s career and his rise to the status of No.1 spinner in a spinner rich country like India.

3. Partnership With Pragyan Ojha.

After an impressive debut in 2011, Ashwin formed a formidable pair with left armer Pragyan Ojha, as their combination formed a double edged sword for the visiting sides. The combination played 13 tests each and scalped 77 and 71 wickets at averages of 25.8 and 24.2. These phenomenal stats led to India thrashing the visiting New Zealand, West Indies and Australia.

He is the first bowler and third in the all time list of Indians, with only Sehwag and Sachin ahead with 5. Joint with him on 4 are also greats like Kumble , Kapil Dev and Harbhajan Singh.
