He clinched his seventh championship title last weekend. He then appeared on Stephen Colbert’s talk show and spoke about his emotions, his childhood, and how a Formula 1 car feels, among other things.
Stephen Colbert asked Hamilton what racing in a Formula 1 car felt like. According to Hamilton, it’s like having superpowers.
“It’s like a superpower to control that car at those speeds in the trickiest conditions.”
Lewis Hamilton gets in a zone while driving
He said, “At the end of the day, the reason I’ve always loved it is the speed, its the adrenaline and I think when I get in the car, I get in some sort of a zone.” Driving a Formula 1 car requires an incredible level of skill.
A driver usually experiences a force up to 6G while going trough a corner. At such high speed, skill and instincts become a driver’s most important weapon. He said, “There are some natural reaction, like you know, in terms of controlling the car.”
It takes many hours of practice and simulator hours to help prepare before a season. He said, “People see it and think it’s easy but it’s obviously the work that goes on in the background that people don’t get to see.”
Formula 1 is a unique sport and Hamilton compared a Formula 1 car to a fighter jet. “I love the challenge because you’d see in the race there were other people who were struggling and I take a lot of pride in the work that I do,” he said.
Lewis Hamilton raced like a champion to win at Istanbul Park. It is widely reported that Hamilton will come back to the grid with Mercedes next season. As for fans, they’ll be waiting for an official announcement and the term of the next year.
