It’s been a while since we have seen Daniel Ricciardo win and currently, he is even struggling to bring in some points. The Australian driver was touted to become a world champion one day before he made a career-shattering Red Bull exit in 2019. Now that he has a second chance with the team, Daniel is still not performing as they require. So far, he is falling behind his teammate Yuki Tsunoda; and this is not a good look for him.

Daniel Ricciardo has to prove himself if he wants to move from VCARB to Red Bull. And with 0 points in the bag, he is now struggling. On the other hand, the younger driver, Yuki Tsunoda, has managed to score 7 points, putting him at P11 in the pecking order. During a recent interview, Danny Rick spoke to Speedcafe as he broke down his teammate’s progress, explaining how last year’s Mexico race made a difference.

While in conversation with Speedcafe, Ricciardo opened up about his teammate Yuki Tsunoda being called the replacement for Sergio Perez. About Tsunoda’s driving, the Honey Badger stated, “He’s driving well. Like, it’s as simple as that, Is he doing anything that’s, let’s say, different? Not really. I think it’s just putting together some really good laps.”

Analyzing his teammate’s performance, Ricciardo further added, “Mexico last year, we made a bit of a breakthrough with set-up, After that very good weekend, I think definitely made Yuki quite curious with our way of driving the car and setting it up, and naturally he’s come closer to that.”

According to Daniel, his teammate has taken a liking to his setup from Mexico and is also adjusting quite well. No doubt, there are differences in personal preferences, but it looks like he has decided to keep most of his setup, like Mexico 2023. Explaining what the Racing Bulls are doing, he claimed, “Now we are actually running the car very similar, and I think he’s found comfort in what I found comfort in last year. He’s been able to kind of get the most out of that package as well.”

Ricciardo concluded the note with, ” He’s [Tsunoda] adapted well to that and he’s driving well. He’s doing good. I don’t want to say… He’s not doing anything crazy, but he’s doing very good.” Despite Tsunoda scoring more points than Ricciardo, the Aussie believes his teammate is not doing anything exceptional. And here is why Yuki Tsunoda has an edge over Daniel Ricciardo.

Yuki Tsunoda discusses his advantages over teammate

Tsunoda recently spoke to Motorsportweek.com and that’s where he revealed how he is better than his teammate. Stating that Ricciardo drives ‘quite well’ and addressing their pace during FP2 and FP3, the Japanese driver explained, “As a driving side, we’re kind of similar, I would say, but probably for my strengths is braking.” Moreover, he also mentioned being confident that not many others can ‘brake’ like him.

This once used to be Daniel Ricciardo’s forte, late braking, which is one of the riskiest things in F1 racing as it is a make-it-or-break-it risk. However, it’s not only braking that puts the Japanese driver ahead. He also stated that he is better on slow-speed corners and ultimately wants to be a reliable driver who can bring in points race after race.
