Over the past few days, the topic of racism has been on everyone’s lips. Lewis Hamilton has been the most vocal about it, having been subjected to it himself. Soon enough, several other drivers began to open up on the issue and universally panned it. Among them is Renault driver Daniel Ricciardo, though he chose a different path to express his feelings on the matter.

In typical Daniel Ricciardo fashion, he resorted to humour, but still managed to drive the point home. It was also a call back to his days as a Red Bull driver, particularly the 2018 season.

Daniel Ricciardo certainly channeled that energy

As he was preparing for the Hungarian Grand Prix, he uttered the words, ‘Big d**k energy’. To be honest, nobody knew what led him to say that, but it certainly helped him during the race. The Aussie had a mountain to climb after qualifying down in 12th.

To make matters worse, Marcus Ericsson clipped him at the start, and Ricciardo dropped down to 16th. However, he never gave up and scythed his way up the field. The now 30-year old picked off several drivers while on his charge back up the order, and finally settled for 4th.

Of course, his cause was not helped by a second collision, this time with Valtteri Bottas. Bottas himself had an adventurous race, courtesy an earlier crash with Sebastian Vettel’s Ferrari. Unfortunately, Bottas misjudged his braking and underestimated the low grip of his fading tyres.

The two ended up colliding, though they managed to continue onwards. Finally, Daniel Ricciardo made one final move on the ailing Finn and made it stick. He would soon go on to finish in an impressive 4th place, which was crucial, since Max Verstappen retired earlier with an engine failure. Suffice to say, he did a fantastic job of shouldering Red Bull’s burden.
