Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg was an inseparable combination. They were teammates at Mercedes for four seasons. Yet their personal rivalry was dragging the team down. Something had to go overboard and Nico Rosberg it was. The German retired immediately after winning his maiden driver’s championship.
However, they are back and will race against each other in ‘The Extreme E’. The series is an effort to bridge the gap between motor racing and environmental awareness. Lewis Hamilton had already registered his team under the name of X-44. The Briton was certain that this is the cause he would like to contribute and also maintain his affinity in motorsport. But Nico Rosberg was not far behind as he too announced his Extreme E team, Rosberg Xtreme Racing.
The 2016 World Champion said, “We are thrilled to unveil Rosberg Xtreme Racing as the latest addition to Extreme E. The series represents an amazing opportunity to not only drive awareness but also inspire action in the fight against climate change–the single biggest threat to our planet today.”
Rosberg has funded numerous start-up plans and also founded the GreenTech Festival to provide a platform for green nature-friendly technologies. Therefore, it is natural for him to take part in something that brings together his favorite activities.
The Extreme E administration could not be any happier to have Nico Rosberg’s team in the championship. The German holds strong ground in the world of motorsport. Thus, his presence will add another star to the championship. In addition, the rivalry between his team and Lewis’ will also draw immense crowds to the circuits.
“We have been talking about this project for many months and we are thrilled he has chosen Extreme E for his formal return to motorsport as founder and CEO of his own racing team. There is clearly a great synergy between Nico’s endeavors in the sustainability field and the aims of Extreme E so his team is a hugely welcomed addition to the series,” said Alejandro Agag, CEO of Extreme E.
The organizers are optimistic about the new format and its cause. The five circuits will see the racers travel across the globe from Asia to America. It stretches far and wide from Brazil to Nepal and is sure to inflict the awareness it aims to achieve.
Lewis Hamilton will always be a member of social awareness programs. But, to see old rivals come together and support a common cause is admirable. The prospect of seeing the two up against each other makes it a dream race for many motorsport fans.
