Earlier this year, F1 announced that they will be shifting the Brazilian Grand Prix to Rio de Janeiro from 2021. The fans were unsurprisingly disheartened as the historic track in Sao Paulo portrayed some incredible racing over the years amid unpredictable weather conditions.

Well, there could be a positive announcement coming up for the ones who favored the classic Interlagos circuit over Rio.

According to TheRace.com, Brazilian Grand Prix will remain at Interlagos as Sao Paulo’s Mayor and the state’s Governor are set to sign a deal with Formula 1.

Apparently, an F1 spokesperson revealed that the Grand Prix at Interlagos will not be a one-off and is expected to stay around the sport at least until 2025.

Earlier this year, Liberty Media decided to terminate their relationship with Sao Paulo amid a fallout between the F1 owners and the promoter.

Eventually, Rio motorsport, a team in Rio de Janeiro, showed interest in hosting the Brazilian Grand Prix. Hence, as expected, the signing too, went through successfully as F1 announced that the following years’ races will be held in Rio.

Why F1 opted to scrap the Rio deal?

The Rio motorsport were supposed to build an entirely new circuit for hosting the upcoming F1 races. However, to build the circuit, the team had to cut down thousands of trees as the planned target area was supposedly around a forest.

Hence, the team needed an environmental license to kick-start their massive project. Unfortunately, they failed to acquire the same as Rio motorsport are barred from clearing the area for the circuit’s construction.

This may have prompted F1 to scrap their deal with Rio and dive back into the famous Interlagos circuit. The circuit deserves to be on the racing calendar considering its eventful race weekends over recent years.

The one that comes to mind is the 2019 race where Pierre Gasly and Lewis Hamilton drag-raced each other to the chequered flag as the Frenchman just got his nose ahead of the Mercedes. In the same race, both the Ferrari drivers crashed into each other. The race was spilled with such incidents throughout.
