Netflix’s show Drive to Survive has taken the entire F1 community by storm. It features F1 drivers racing hard against each other throughout the season, while also giving the fans an insight into the behind-the-scenes of an F1 season.

The popularity of the show has made F1 drivers into household names across the globe. An F1 fan named Sean Hayes clicked some pictures with Formula One drivers and team principles during the first day of Australian Grand Prix weekend.

In his caption, he wrote that he met ‘Drive to Survive actors’ rather than F1 drivers. This indicates the growth and the popularity of the show and how the drivers are depicted in it.

F1 drivers are not impressed with DTS’ portrayal of events

The show has come under criticism during recent seasons for its over-dramatization of the characters and rivalries. Many F1 drivers, including Lando Norris and Max Verstappen, have spoken that the show depicts unnecessary drama and creates nonexisting conflicts.

Many have heavily criticized season 4 of the show for creating nonexisting tension between the McLaren duo of Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris. F1 journalist Rebecca Clancy mentioned that when she spoke to the British driver, he was not happy with the latest season.

“There’s quite a lot of angst about how it is portrayed. It’s undeniable in terms of popularity… but in the paddock it’s tricky. The 2021 season was arguably the best ever in F1. You were better off just watching the (races) instead of Drive to Survive,” said the F1 insider.

“In episode two, it makes out there is a big rift between Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris, and there isn’t. I spoke to Lando Norris, and he said, ‘Didn’t know you and Daniel had fallen out?’. He was like, ‘I haven’t, I watched it, it’s so ridiculous.’ said Clancy.

Although it is nice to see the awareness, the show has created around the world about the sport and the drivers; it needs to stick to reality as closely as possible. F1 has suggested some changes to Netflix to incorporate into the show next season to make it more realistic. It would be interesting to see if there are any changes that Netflix makes to its format.
