2020 has not been a very kind year for Ferrari, who find themselves closer to the bottom than the top in the Constructors’ standings. At the other end, their rival Mercedes have now confirmed yet another championship to add to their tally.
The technical regulations enforceable from 2022 have been long talked about as a potential game-changer. Some even think this is a “reset button” for many teams, to put their best foot forward in a bid to earn success.
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff thinks Ferrari will consider waiving off any expectations from next season. Considering the Scuderia can start afresh, and develop a stronger car right from the start of 2022.

Ferrari would eye to build a balanced car from the 2022 season onwards
Earlier last week, Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto had mentioned the ongoing developments at the team’s Maranello base. He had revealed the dyno testing procedures had produced some positive results.
Many have long wondered if Mercedes’ dominance would end anytime soon. Going into 2021, it would feel like they have one less title challenger to compete with.

Wolff is quoted as saying, “There will be teams, like Ferrari, who will write off 2021 completely and develop the 2022 car right from the start.
“It is of course somewhat difficult for us to find a good balance between these two things.” (translated via Google Translate)
The 2021 cars will not be very different from the existing cars from this season. Nevertheless, Ferrari, with their newest upgrades, should be able to put up a fight of some sort.

Challenging for titles is not an immediate aim for the Scuderia
Various spokespersons of Ferrari have downplayed their chances of fighting at the front of the grid just yet. Like driver Charles Leclerc had earlier expressed, the Italian giants catapulting to the top of the table immediately, is unrealistic.
That is not to say, however, that podiums would not be on their radar. Even in one of their worst seasons, Leclerc has proven to be a Top 5 finisher, and potentially more.
