The incident prompted an outpouring of concern from the motorsport community and fans worldwide. Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, the former president of Ferrari, recently disclosed the emotional turmoil experienced by the team on that fateful day.

Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, the former president of Ferrari who held the position from 2004 to 2014, recently opened up about the harrowing day when Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher suffered a life-changing skiing accident in 2013. In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, he shared the confusion and anxiety that engulfed the Ferrari headquarters upon receiving the initial reports of the incident.

“I was in the office in Maranello, and I received the news through Stefano Lai, who was in charge of Communication at that moment. Initially, we didn’t have complete information about what had happened. We thought maybe he had broken both legs,” revealed Montezemolo, reflecting on the first moments after learning about the accident.

The wishful thinking that it might have been a skiing accident with serious but not severe injuries prevailed in the early moments at the Ferrari headquarters. However, the grim reality began to unfold as increasingly negative updates arrived from the alpine resort of Meribel.

After a few minutes, the news started coming in, and that’s when we began to worry. Look, the less I talk about it, the better, because it was a terrible day,” expressed the Italian executive about a day he would never have wished to experience.

10 years have passed since the fateful day, and the Schumachers, respecting what the former Ferrari and Mercedes driver would have wanted, have kept his health battles private. However, several friends have given the general world a sense of what the champions’ struggles have been all these years.

In a rare revelation from a trusted source close to the family, journalist Roger Benoit, a friend of the Schumacher family, recently provided a somber update on the legendary Formula 1 driver. Benoit’s poignant statement to Blick left little room for optimism, stating unequivocally, “No [there is no hope].”

Respecting the Schumacher’s wishes, Benoit maintained a tight lip on the German legend’s condition. “There is only one answer to this question and that is what his son Mick gave in one of his rare interviews in 2022: ‘I would give anything to talk to dad’.”
