There is no denying that the 7-time world champion has a massive fan-following from around the globe. Not to forget the celebratory welcome he usually receives during the race weekends at Silverstone. Hence, one might assume that Hamilton could well be the favorite F1 driver on the grid.

Well, if that’s your assumption, then, you’re wrong. Hamilton is only the third favorite driver according to the survey held by Motorsport. More than 167,000 fans from 187 different countries had registered their votes. So, who is leading the race?

Most favorite F1 driver of 2021

Max Verstappen! The Dutchman has been quite a headache for Hamilton throughout this season, as he has constantly been piling up pressure on the defending champion. And it looks like his on-track efforts could pay off considering the fact he is still leading the championship fight after 16 Grand Prix events.

Even before he could win his first championship title, he certainly has won the fans’ hearts. According to the survey, around 14.4% of fans voted for the Red Bull driver, with one-third of the voters placing him in their respective top threes.

Behind Verstappen arrives Lando Norris with 13.7% votes, which hardly comes as a shock. The Briton has been a treat to watch over the past couple of seasons. However, unlike 2020, it has been all about on-track achievements for Norris.

Despite enduring tough results since the British GP (Monza being an exception), Norris is still very much on par to securing a top-4 finish in the driver’s standings.

Behind Norris is his fellow British colleague, Hamilton. A tough pill to swallow for the Hamilton fans. Around 12.5% of the fans voted for the record-equaling world champion. But, it isn’t really surprising.

Hamilton has often faced a lot of hate in recent years for his dominance in F1. Of course, in the hindsight, Hamilton was never to blame, rather it was Mercedes’ impeccable engineering that helped him attain such prodigious feats in the sport. All Hamilton did was grab onto the opportunities that came in his way.
