The 40-year-old Kimi Raikkonen driving alongside 21-year-old Mick Schumacher, albeit temporarily, will be a combination of epic proportions, with two people at the extreme ends in their careers.

But then again, if you are passionate about racing, age is just a number. That applies to both drivers who will be driving the Alfa Romeo C39 in Friday’s free practice.

Ahead of the Eifel GP, Raikkonen would have conversed with Mick Schumacher, and his takeaways from their interaction will certainly please the young Ferrari academy driver.

In a brief interview, Raikkonen stated, “He’s a really nice guy and in many ways a copy of his father. It’s great to see him here. It’s nice that he’ll be in the car tomorrow.” (translated from Google Translate)

The Finn famously competed with Michael Schumacher during the 2003 season. Only losing out on the title by 2 points, Raikkonen would have felt that his earlier retirements in the season ultimately cost him.

But he eventually won the drivers’ title with Ferrari in 2007. Raikkonen and Schumacher continued racing against each other for a few years after that as well. Now, years later, the ‘Iceman’ will be racing alongside ‘Schumi Junior’ on Friday.

Although nothing has been confirmed as yet, speculation is rife that Mick Schumacher could make the Alfa Romeo seat his own. This is considering Kimi Raikkonen remains in the cockpit of the C39 for yet another year.

In which case, the practice session is a trial run of sorts for Alfa Romeo to make an informed decision. But for the time being, Mick will make his debut at what is one of the toughest circuits in the world. Putting in a good show will certainly prove that he is ready to make the step up to Formula One.
