Pierre Gasly has been writing a tale of redemption and the latest chapter in his story records his maiden victory. In the wake of the shock victory, the defending champion, Lewis Hamilton, praised Gasly to the high heavens.
Speaking to ESPN in its podcast, Gasly responded to the praise and found it “very touching”. The Frenchman also revealed that the Mercedes driver has been a goldmine of information and advice over the past few months.
According to Hamilton, the performance proved that Red Bull was wrong to demote the French driver to AlphaTauri.
Ever since Gasly returned to Toro Rosso/AlphaTauri, his career has been on the upswing. Admittedly, his Monza victory was not a flash in the pan moment, since he has been one of the standout drivers in 2020.
His 2nd place finish at the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix is yet more proof of what Red Bull have been missing out on.
Interestingly, Pierre Gasly revealed that he is in regular contact with Hamilton for queries and tips. He said, “For me Lewis is a very special guy, someone I really looked at when I was a kid and in my eyes is probably the best driver we ever had in F1, or at least part of the two or three top guys if not the best guy.”
In lieu of that, the AlphaTauri driver was touched to hear such praise from a 6-time World Champion. However, he confessed that it felt strange because he looked up to them since he was young.
Lewis Hamilton was always a model driver to follow. So it is surreal to suddenly be racing with him and earning his praise. Gasly concluded, “I got to know him a bit more in the last two years.
“We actually texted the day before on Saturday. Before the race, and all over the weekend, as I wanted to ask him some advice on other things. He’s been always very nice to me, very open, always trying to help.”
