Helmut Marko has always been under scrutiny in F1 for one reason or another. Sometimes for exaggerating stuff while other times for making really harsh statements. The Red Bull taskmaster, however, recently made a controversial comment about Sergio Perez. While Checo didn’t take any offense to the comment, Lewis Hamilton lashed out at Helmut Marko for the derogatory comments. What did the 7X champ say?

Helmut Marko recently came under scrutiny for his comments regarding Sergio Perez’s ethnicity as he advised that Checo being a South American isn’t as focused as Max Verstappen or Sebastian Vettel. All hell broke loose on the Red Bull taskmaster. Derogatory comments regarding ethnicity isn’t something that F1 tolerates. However, Sergio Perez didn’t take any offense as Marko didn’t mean the statement in a derogatory way.

Sergio Perez said, “I took his apology, because I know Helmut from the personal relationship that we have, that he doesn’t mean it that way. And I didn’t get offended at all, personally.”

However, Lewis Hamilton, who’s always been against any sort of racism or social evil lashed out at Helmut Marko as he made a scathing statement. According to the video uploaded by @hamburgerhOtdog, Hamilton said, “Ultimately, it’s completely unacceptable what he said. Whilst we say there’s no room for any discrimination within this sport – which there should be no room for it – to have leaders and people in this position making comments like this is not good for us moving forward.”

While the comments made by Helmut Marko cannot be justified, he did apologize for his remarks. Let’s see what Marko said.

Sergio Perez didn’t take any offense about Marko’s comments. It’s probably because Marko apologized for his comments and suggested that he did not mean any derogatory comments toward any community. He explained that he was trying to advise on Checo’s performance but the way he did it and attributed it was wrong.

According to Sky Sports, Helmut Marko said, “I would like to apologize for my offensive remark and want to make it absolutely clear that I do not believe that we can generalize about the people from any country, any race, any ethnicity. I was trying to make a point that Checo has fluctuated in his performance this year, but it was wrong to attribute this to his cultural heritage”
