Pierre Gasly did not kick-off 2020 on the right note. However, since his surprise win at the Italian Grand Prix, the Frenchman has simply shot upwards. His style has improved, and he drives with a lot more vigor now. Even though teams might be interested in his future, Red Bull won’t let him let him go anytime soon.
Franz Tost is a highly esteemed veteran in the sport. There have been times when he was regarded as one of the best team principals ever. Given his time in the sport, his hindsight is valuable. From that perspective, after judging Gasly‘s form, he predicted that Red Bull will retain him for the future.
Pierre had his shot at the Red Bull main team. However, after he failed to get in sync with the car, he was demoted to Alpha Tauri. Since then, the manner in which Gasly has turned the tables is commendable. He not only scored two podiums for Alpha Tauri but also got them their first win in 12 years.
“You know, if a driver is competitive like Pierre, then yes, of course other teams will ask about the contractual details. They’ll want to know eventually when a driver is available.
“But he has a Red Bull contract, and I don’t think Red Bull will give him free at such an early stage. They invested a lot of money to build him up, and sooner or later, they want to get his fruits back and good results with him, win races, and also championships,” highlighted Tost.
After his win at Monza, Gasly was dreaming of a Red Bull comeback. However, Christian Horner soon clarified that they were not planning on promoting him. Since then, he started considering AlphaTauri in higher esteem and was motivated to bring glory to the team. He knew it would be tough, but he was fancying a challenge.
For 2021, Yuki Tsunoda, the rookie sensation will line up beside him. His responsibility – act as a complementing teammate and a mentor to the Japanese national. He will have to lead the team, and Tost believes that he is ready for the job.
“He is now an experienced driver, and a successful driver as well. Any team always is oriented and concentrated to a successful driver. The team listens to the technical feedback of the driver, and of course, as a result of this, the new design of the car [is influenced].
“Let me say it in this way: the designers and the engineers, they keep the consideration of all technical feedback from such a good driver that they make next year’s car even better,” concluded Tost.
Pierre Gasly has already been phenomenal with the car this season. With one that is modified according to his feedbacks and his requirements, he will simply fare better. Honda is aiming for a better power unit this season, which hints at the best action from Gasly next season.
