Lewis Hamilton is back behind the wheel of a Mercedes! With the 2020 season less than a month away, teams and drivers are hitting the tracks to shake off the pre-season rust. Mercedes have begun testing at Silverstone, albeit with a 2018 spec car. Ferrari are also planning to do the same at Fiorano soon.
Lewis Hamilton and fellow Silver Arrows driver, Valtteri Bottas arrived at Silverstone for the on-track testing. Mercedes have planned a two day testing period, where not only will the drivers be able to get in some laps, but also familiarise themselves with the new health and safety guidelines, issued by Formula One and the FIA.
Valtteri was the first to hit the track in the W09 yesterday, followed by Lewis today. While the Finn encountered dry conditions behind the wheel, Lewis faced a more tricky proposition in the rain. However, this is a car in which Lewis won the 2018 drivers’ championship by 408 points. That is 88 points ahead of Vettel in second place, so it’s not like a 6-time world champion like Hamilton would struggle with a little bit of rain. Lewis Hamilton posted a clip of himself, setting off on the pit lane with Mercedes today, with the words, “Back behind the wheel.”
Away from the track, Lewis Hamilton has been very active on his social media. For the past couple of weeks, Hamilton has been championing the cause for the ‘black lives matter’ movement. He has been bold enough to question the F1 fraternity’s silence over the matter, and since then most of Lewis’ fellow drivers have come out and voiced their support for the movement. Also, a couple of days ago, Lewis attacked the UK government for not handling the COVID-19 pandemic situation adequately.
Now, Lewis will have his focus totally dedicated to on-track matters. The Briton will be aiming to draw level with Michael Schumacher’s record of 7 world championship titles. He will also be hoping for another year of dominance for himself and Mercedes on the grid.
