It is no secret that Lewis Hamilton is a massive Arsenal FC fan. So, ahead of the 2019 Monaco Grand Prix, Hamilton received an invitation to a 5-a-side football match against Arsenal legend Thierry Henry. Hamilton led a team consisting of Robert Pires, Sol Campbell, Tubes and Ray Parlour.
Meanwhile, Henry’s team included Jamie Carragher, Paul Merson, Jamie Redknapp and Carlo Cudicini. In addition that, Martin Tyler and Martin Brundle teamed up in the commentary booth.
In all honesty, Hamilton proved to be a formidable opponent and got in on the action straight off the bat. He managed to get in a few good tackles and vied with Henry for the ball. Unfortunately, Henry ensured that, world champion or not, Hamilton was going down. Within a few minutes, the Frenchman managed to wrong foot Lewis Hamilton and sent him tumbling.
If the Mercedes superstar was not an F1 driver, he could have done incredibly well as a football player. He had a hand in the very first goal itself, though it deflected off Jamie Redknapp for an own goal. Although Henry pulled one back, Hamilton helped surge ahead when he bagged an assist to Robert Pires’ goal.
Unfortunately, Lewis Hamilton came across a massive obstacle called Jamie Carragher. The former Liverpool defender managed to floor Hamilton on a few occasions. It got to a stage where the commentators joked that. Hamilton may injure himself before the Monaco GP.
In the end, the scores were tied at 5-5 and the match went into a penalty shootout. Sadly, Hamilton lost the game, in spite of netting his penalty kick. However, he can take pride in the fact that it was a close game and it went down to the wire. In addition to that, Carragher managed to take down Hamilton several times during the match.
