The World of F1 is as much about glitz and glamor as it is about racing. After all, it is the most expensive sport on Earth. And where there are hundreds of millions of dollars on the line, a regulatory body’s presence is more than necessary. And that is why the FIA and the Concorde agreement exist, so the sport can operate smoothly. However, recently, Liberty Media has been pushing the FIA to renew the Concorde agreement. But, FIA President Mohammed bin Sulayem does want to make haste, and in getting his point across, has also taken a dig at Vince McMahon and the unregulated WWE.
For the unversed, the Concorde agreement is something that binds the 10 teams and the Media House associated with F1 for the decided period. And it also decides the split of winnings among the 10 teams. The last agreement was signed in 2021 and it ends in 2025. But with the rise in viewership and commercialism of F1, Liberty Media wants to sign a new agreement right away. However, Sulayem wants to focus on more important matters at hand. Keeping Liberty Media’s pressure at bay, he cited the example of how McMahon-regulated (but unregulated) WWE is mismanaged.

Ben Sulayem told AP, as quoted by Formulapassion, “The Pact of Concord is something we have to address, but it has to be suitable for all parties. There are stakeholders, partners, the FIA, Liberty Media, the 10 teams and we still have months to go. “Our house is not on fire. We have to talk to each other and get the best for everyone. If you want a strong FIA, we have to work together and empower the Federation, which is the regulator and owns the championships.”

He elaborated, saying, “When you go to the United States, for example, you can talk to the big manufacturers and the reason we can do that is that it’s an FIA championship. If it weren’t an FIA championship, it would end up like WWE, without a regulator. What is needed is a governing body. Do you really think these corporations are wasting their money on something they don’t trust? We have the necessary time, we will not rush. We’re on the right track, but it’s a marathon.”
All F1 teams have been critical of newer teams entering F1. But after the Concorde agreement ends in 2025, new teams cannot be disallowed from entering F1.

Muhammed Ben Sulayem Says He Cannot Stop Andretti From Entering F1
Michael Andretti has been working for the last 2 years to get his team on F1. But he has faced a lot of resistance from the other teams because of the winnings split issue. Earlier, it required $200 million for a new to enter the sport. But this year, all the teams agreed that a minimum of $600 million should be needed so that the winnings remain unchanged.
But according to Sulayem, he has no right to stop big brands who are willing to shell out the big bucks from entering F1. He told AP, “We have in the regulations that we can go up to 12 teams. I’m not breaking (rules). But do we allow anyone to enter? No. But how on earth can we refuse GM? I mean, where’s the common sense in this? GM is a heavyweight and when they come with Andretti, that’s good for all of us.”

There are still over 2 years before the Concorde agreement ends. Yet, the popularity of F1 has risen so much that Liberty Media cannot control their excitement or let the ownership shift to someone else.
