Max Verstappen has undoubtedly been the second-best driver on the grid for the last few years now. The Dutch phenom has time and again displayed the kind of talent and consistency which suggests that he will be a future world champion.

However, for him to realize his dream of winning the title, Lewis Hamilton has to retire, or move to a team not named Mercedes. Both those outcomes seem unlikely, at least for the next few years. The Briton is still firing on all cylinders. By the time he is done, he could well be the greatest F1 driver of all time, period.

However, Verstappen is content with biding his time until the opportunity arises.

Speaking to Motorsport.com, Max said, “Of course I would like to fight for the championship [in 2021], but we’ll have to find out.

“I mean, I’m still very young. And of course, you know, people say time is ticking. But I’m very relaxed. And it’s life. Also, you know, sometimes you cannot force things. So I stay calm.”

Despite being just 23 years old, he has over six years of experience in the sport. Surely, the Red Bull star is set to dominate the grid for years to come once Hamilton calls it a day. Who knows, his chance may come even earlier if Red Bull can dramatically improve their car.

The Dutchman ended the previous campaign in third place with 214 points. Through the course of the season, Max notched up two wins and 11 podiums. One would say that’s a pretty good season. However, anything less than the championship wouldn’t be enough to satisfy Verstappen at this stage of his career.

Heading into 2021, Verstappen is optimistic about the car being an improved version of its predecessor. He said, “I do think we can make a big step.

“But I also expect others to have a step. So I just hope that that ours is a bit bigger than the others.”

Only time will tell just how much the Red Bull car has improved. However, fans can rest assured, knowing that out on the track, Verstappen will be extracting every ounce of performance from the machine.
