Two-time Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso may have left the sport, but he still tries to stay as relevant as possible. Recently, the Spaniard spoke about the current Formula One stars, and one name stood out for him.
He is of the opinion that no other driver in the sport is as good as Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. The Dutchman debuted in Formula One in 2015 and burst into the limelight. Then, in 2016, he was drafted into Red Bull after just four races, winning in his first race, and grabbing seven more.
Currently, the 22-year-old is enjoying a strong season for Aston Martin Red Bull Racing. He is lying fourth in the drivers’ standings, a mere 14 points behind Ferrari driver and fellow young star, Charles Leclerc.
“There is no better driver in Formula 1, it is not possible to analyze every aspect,” Alonso told Formula Passion.”You have to see who is the best within a few years.”
“Today I like to follow Max Verstappen because he is always in attack mode and this is good for the spectators.”
Admittedly, Max Verstappen is still a little far from becoming a Formula One champion. Unfortunately, his often over-eager antics get him into trouble with his contemporaries. In spite of this, Fernando Alonso still thinks highly of the Dutchman.
Alonso has been acting as an ambassador for McLaren ever since he hung up his Formula One overalls. However, he will still be able to drive the car in selected tests to help with development of both this year’s Formula 1 car and its 2020 design.
The two-time F1 world champion also attempted to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 with McLaren but failed to do so. Since then, he has taken up rallying with Toyota and is even going to attempt the gruelling Dakar Rally. However, McLaren CEO Zak Brown said that there are no guarantees that McLaren’s partnership with Alonso will continue into 2020.
