Formula 2 is a feeder series where top racers are in with a shout of securing a seat in Formula One. But there has rarely been an occasion when an entire team has moved into the big leagues. The Prema Powerteam F2 team has expressed interest in entering the series if F1 allows customer teams. The Italian marquee has fielded cars in F4, European Formula 3 and F2 among others. They are also the main driver market for the Ferrari team to groom their drivers.

Five of their drivers including the ever impressive Charles Leclerc are part of the Ferrari Driver Academy. Team boss Rene Rosin has admitted that he is contemplating a move to Formula One if the rules allowed for a customer car entry. He said that getting into Formula One is a dream shared between drivers and engineers.

“Of course I know that it’s a dream, and it would be really difficult to obtain it. There needs to be a lot of changes in the structures of motorsport to do something to arrive at that point. It depends on how everything is organised, and in the case of a customer car I think it’s possible to be organised. But of course with the situation as it is today, no – it’s something that needs to be planned, needs to be agreed and needs to be developed, also in terms of regulations.”

Rosin has even tipped F2 championship leader Leclerc to snatch a seat in Formula One, particularly with Sauber. “I think that they have to put him in the [F1] car,” says Rosin. “Otherwise what’s the sense of the junior formulas? What’s the sense of Formula 1 either if we are not able to promote the best drivers to the field?”
