The hype around Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is high, and justifiably so. The much-awaited tweak to the classic remake of Square Enix’s celebrated release is weeks away from an exclusive PlayStation 5 launch. From various new innovations to vastly expansive adventures, FF7 Rebirth is set to take the original game’s portion of the narrative to a whole new level. While the expectations for the forthcoming PS5 launch are high, there’s something ready that might take you by surprise. Well, just a hint: you can never be ‘all-prepared’ for this massive homecoming!

The Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has been making headlines for a while now. Ever since the project was announced, fans have been invested in seeing what the developers had to offer with the crazy idea. The fact that the Rebirth would bring a completely new angle to the storyline and characters deviating from the main timeline narrative appealed to the community due to the potential surprises it could have in store. One such big discussion was around how the developers would manage to bring some iconic characters to the main frame. Remember Zack Fair? What if you were to meet the ‘hero’ of FF7 again, but with a twist?

In a recent publication, Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of the project, made some intriguing revelations about the character of Zack. At the end of the Final Fantasy 7 remake, players were surprised to catch Zack’s unexpected appearance. The character had died in the original FF7 during his short feature in the game. However, with the tease dropped in the remake, fans had been speculating about Zack’s significance in the rebirth. Also, since the Rebirth was a deviation from the main timeline story, the theories seemed highly plausible. Here’s what the director has to say about the same.

We have used the character of Zack to depict the combined view of the original creators’ intent of how this world of Final Fantasy 7 came to be and its policies and rules governing this world. As much as Whispers within the story, Zack is an equally, immensely important, crucial key character to this story that I believe fans will enjoy in the Rebirth,” the director stated.

The original creators that the director talked about are story and scenario writer Kazushige Nojima, creative director Tetsuya Nomura, and producer Yoshinori Kitase. All these veterans were involved in the source inspiration of the Remake and the Rebirth.

Deducing the possibilities from the trailer

Based on what has been revealed in the trailers, Zack might wind up assisting the other members of the main party instead of only showing up in flashbacks. It’s possible for the game to pull off a massive bait-and-switch by making Zack the new protagonist and having Cloud die in the end.

The most likely way this death would occur is if Aerith were to replace Cloud in the famous moment from the first Final Fantasy game (when she is killed by Sephiroth). Cloud can be shown participating in battles and other significant plot points in the trailers for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

All these theories only add up to the excitement built around the game. Fortunately, fans won’t be waiting too long to get all the answers from Rebirth. The PlayStation 5 exclusive goes live on February 29, 2024.
