After Nearly 6 Years, Red Dead Redemption 2 Remains One of the Most Detailed Open World Games of All Time

Open world games, when done right, turn out to become some of the most beautiful games. And not many do it like Rockstar Games. And the GTA 6 trailer is just the latest example. It is being said that this would be their largest and most detailed title yet. It has become a custom for them, it seems; every time they release a new game, it is touted as the largest and most detailed yet. But right now, that honor goes to Red Dead Redemption 2.

Released in 2018, RDR2 has sold around 57 million copies. Sure it may be behind GTA V, but that’s only because Rockstar Games are milking it for all it’s worth, especially with GTA online. When it comes to what makes a game a true open world title in every sense of the term, any game developer would be wise to take notes from the way RDR2 was made.

Reasons why Red Dead Redemption 2 is still considered the most detailed open-world game yet

1) Don’t let the gun get wet

One of the first things players are taught in Red Dead Redemption 2 is how they can use gun oil to restore their weapons to their original condition. Oil is widely available and not very expensive to purchase, but weapons get dirty so often that players can run out of those oils pretty fast. Hence, it’s better to just keep your weapons out of harm’s way and prevent them from getting dirty.

Arthur knows this well enough. And he tries to keep his guns clean, too. Especially when he is walking through a body of water with his gun equipped, he will visibly try to lift his weapon up to keep it from getting wet. Yep, Rockstar Games actually made sure this happened in the game.

2) Horses get tired too

Horses are a central part of Red Dead Redemption 2. Players go around looking for the one that suits them the best; and then they save it as their own. But it is highly recommended that they take care of it too. Brush and clean it, feed it, and most importantly, try to give it some rest every now and then.

If players ride their horse in this game for a prolonged time without allowing it any rest, it will start shaking. The tiredness would show in its body language. Hence, players better keep an eye on how their horse walks if they have neglected its need to rest for a long time.

3) Sticky Saddles

Shootings are a common occurrence in the Wild West. Arthur might not even want to fight anyone, but he would still end up in a shootout. And when one of these shootouts happens with people on horseback, this makes for an entertaining show. Sometimes when players would shoot those people, they would die, but instead of falling off their horses, their legs would get stuck in the saddle, and the horse would drag them along as it ran away from the gunfire.

This was a detail Rockstar Games never had to add. No one would have missed it because no one had seen it before in a game, and that might be the reason they did it.

4) Unusual random encounters

Random encounters have been a thing in Rockstar Games titles since Red Dead Redemption 1. In that game, it was limited to retrieving a stolen wagon from a bunch of thieves and returning it to their owners. But by the time RDR 2 launched, it was on a whole other level. Now players would hear cries for help while riding through secluded woods, and when they would go to help, they might end up getting surrounded by a bunch of thieves.

Sometimes they would hear a man coughing and screaming in agony about how unwell he was. When players would go on to check on them, they would be welcomed by the barrel of a gun. They would even blame Arthur for trying to steal from a sick man.

5) Animals have compassion

Killing animals is a common occurrence in these games; you kill an animal, skin it, cut it for meat, and move on. But what happens to the remains? Well, they remain exactly where you left them. This is a commonly known thing to be fair. Everyone knows that dead bodies do not just magically go away when players leave them behind. But not many know that if animals found the bodies of their companions, they would stay there and mourn.

For example, players can find a wolf mourning the death of another wolf, killed either by the player or by someone else. A splendid detail indeed.

6) Horse Sweat

Yep, another horse-related detail. Not everyone knows this, but horses run pretty fast. Yes, yes, and when they run fast, they sweat a lot, but that sweat actually travels back through their saddle. Then it turns into a white foam-like thing and stays there for a long time. Sometimes it takes more than one cleaning before the horse is completely clean.

And this is actually in the game. Someone at Rockstar Games decided that horses need to sweat, which is as realistic as it gets. They made that happen, and many players don’t realize this and end up thinking something’s wrong with their horse.

These details are nothing to scoff about. These are some details some players would fail to notice or comletely overlook or brush aside as no big deal. But try imagining this game or any such RPGs without the finer details added for realism. If they did all this for a game that launched on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles, imagine what one can expect from GTA 6.
