inXile Entertainment is built by developers from Interplay Games, the studio that developed Fallout and the first ever Wasteland game back in 1988. They decided to bring back the spirit of the real turn-based strategy RPG games with the remake of Wasteland titles. And when those games ended up being successful, they started working on Wasteland 3.

The third game is something different altogether. At least in tone, it has more of a comedic tone. And if people like games with a sense of humor, they would love Wasteland 3 the most.

Gameplay

In terms of gameplay, Wasteland 3 is a squad-based role-playing game with turn-based gameplay mechanics. Turn-based means players and their foes take turns attacking each other; this type of gameplay requires a lot of thought and planning beforehand. If players have put enough points in their speech stat, they might even go ahead without fighting anyone.

A game with a number of outcomes for all encounters players have. They can change their equipment, and they can use different kinds of weapons. When not in combat, players are free to explore a huge open world set in post-apocalyptic Colorado.

Story

The story is pretty straightforward; at least it starts that way. Player’s control two members of the Arizona Ranger. After surviving an ambush, they have to fight for their survival with the help of a local leader simply known as “the patriarch.” The game eventually received a couple of expansions, expanding that story even further.

Graphics

It looks beautiful enough in its own way. It’s a colorful game with an isometric view of the world. Even though the perspective is a bit unusual, the world is painstakingly detailed. It might not be the best-looking game of the bunch, but it still looks pretty good.

Fallout 4

After they released Skyrim, Bethesda had to do something similar for the Fallout franchise. They had to develop a game that was a noticeable upgrade over both Skyrim and Fallout 3. They succeeded in both ways. Fallout 4 is not only visually superior to its predecessor, but it has added a bunch of new things to make it worthy of every RPG fan’s attention.

Gameplay

Players are free to play this game in the first or third person. It also mostly plays as a shooter. Players are free to build their own custom weapons and armor. They can also upgrade their existing pieces of armor. Beyond all this, players can choose specific skills to make their character an expert in certain categories. It can be speech, engineering, or anything else they desire. These things open up a bunch of new ways for players to complete their missions and advance the story.

Then there’s the VATS system. While players usually play this game as shooters. VATS freezes the time and allows players to aim at specific body parts of an enemy. Besides combat, players have the whole Boston area at their disposal. They can explore and accept side quests with no limits. There’s also a very detailed settlement-building mechanic. Players build their mechanics and are required to keep them safe from raiders, mutants, etc.

Story

The story is pretty simple: players wake up after being in a cryo-changer for numerous years. They find their kid, who was also in the chamber, missing. In search of that child, they scourge the whole post-apocalyptic Boston.

This story was expanded by a couple of expansions called Far Harbor and Nuka-World. Both introduce new areas to their worlds.

Graphics

Fallout 4 looks like a more polished Skyrim. But it is set in a gloomier world with a yellowish hue, as is the case with every post-apocalyptic world. This one would not win any prizes when it comes to visuals, but it looks detailed enough to be called a good-looking game.

Starfield

After topping Skyrim with Fallout 4, Bethesda had to do it all over once again. Not many know that they started work on Starfield even before the launch of Fallout 4. After eight years of development, Starfield was launched in 2023. And what did it bring to the table? There is a whole new galaxy of things to do.

Gameplay

Just like any other Bethesda game before it, this one features both first- and third-person camera mods. Once again, gameplay is mostly dependent on the stats that players upgrade. Being a technician or a gunslinger is all up to the players.

Layered armor and customizable weapons make a comeback. Players can go guns blazing or have a conversation, and everything works if done correctly. Also based on choices made during character development. For example, if players choose that their character has a history with a particular group of people. And if they end up meeting those people sometimes in the game, they will let them go in an instant.

Players are free to explore the galaxy as they wish. Planet after planet, they can explore for resources and build their settlements on planets full of resources. They can also customize their spaceships and decide if they want them to fly better or fight better.

Exploration is the key to this game. And Bethesda has made exploration a cakewalk and interesting. Take companions or go solo. Build settlements, mine resources, hunt bounties, and so much more.

There are some expansions planned for this one too, but they have yet to make any concrete announcements regarding the same.

Graphics

The ultimate next-gen upgrade for Fallout 4 visuals. The game is very beautiful in some instances. Other times, it looks like a more youthful sibling of Bethesda’s older games. Their creation engine has started showing its age now. Here’s hoping they change it for their next title.

If one has to choose, they should go for Fallout 4 without a second thought. Most players might find a bunch of enjoyable elements in the other two, but the latest Fallout game is the ultimate post-apocalyptic experience. Its gameplay is fun, and its world is full of characters with a hint of self-awareness.
