Co-op games are a great way to have fun with your friends and family. People who do not enjoy playing video games alone are always on the lookout for a good title to play with a companion. And most platforms do not have any shortage of such games. But sometimes gamers need a bit of a story with their games.

While story-based games are also a dime a dozen on most platforms, it becomes hard to find a game with a good story, and that too with co-op support. For gamers searching for games with such a unique resume, here’s a list of a few excellent PlayStation 5 co-op games with excellent stories.

1) Dying Light 2

An underrated gem, Dying Light 2, is an incredible first-person survival horror game with an exciting twist. Instead of walking around the map and shooting zombies in the head, players run and parkour around the map. And they use a bunch of craftable melee weapons as their tools of destruction.

And do not think for a second that the zombies in this game are anything to scoff about. They too are pretty dangerous, and developer Techland has made sure that players are continuously challenged. Especially at night, when volatiles come out, a zombie that’s faster and more dangerous than your usual brain eaters. So, if you ever decide to jump in, take a friend, as Dying Light 2 also supports co-op.

2) Borderlands 3

An open world full of colorful characters to kill, a bunch of comically weird companions and NPCs to interact with, and loads and loads of guns. For those unaware of Borderlands games, these feature a bunch of characters called the vault hunters on the lookout for a hidden treasure. There are always at least four vault hunters to choose from; sometimes there are more. And up to four players can play these games together.

These are quite colorful looter shooters. Imagine Diablo set in a sci-fi world, but instead of using magic and medieval weapons, you use incredibly weird and inventive guns. Guns are the main stars of this game; some scream, some fire grenades, some are thrown when reloading, and they explode. There’s just no limit to what this game can throw at its players in terms of weaponry.

3) Elden Ring

Someone might think that it’s pretty unusual to find this game on almost every list this year. But this game is totally worth it. FromSoftware is pretty popular for giving fans an experience that is immersive, mysterious, and addictive. Discovering new areas, uncovering mysteries, and defeating god-tier bosses are just some things that players can do in this game. And when one talks about bosses, there are over 200 of them in Elden Ring. No doubt one or two of them would be a cause for trouble for some players. What do they do then? They call for help, and that’s where the co-op mode comes in.

Players can clear whole areas and defeat seemingly impossible bosses with the help of their pals in Elden Ring. While bosses get harder with every new person who enters the arena, they are still much easier when there is a person there to distract them.

4) Diablo 4

The craze for action role-playing games has touched new heights in 2023. This was all thanks to the launch of games like Baldur’s Gate 3, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Diablo 4. While Diablo and Zelda are more light-hearted RPGs, they still gave RPG fans the thrills they sought. Diablo 4 goes a little further by being a live-service title, in that this game receives continuous content updates.

Another way this game stands out is by allowing more than one player to enjoy this world. The whole world of Diablo 4 can be explored with friends, and all the bosses can be defeated with them. It is completely designed with co-op play in mind. Just equip your spells and your weapons and slash around enemies, and you don’t even have to fight for the loot; you get individual loot after each boss.

5) Baldur’s Gate 3

Another game players can expect to find on pretty much every “best” list out there. An open-world computer role-playing game with freedom written in its veins. Players get to choose almost everything they do. They get to choose their romantic preferences, the paths they take, the way they want the story to end, and their co-op partners.

Play with friends and uncover the mysteries of the forgotten realms. This game is incredibly fun to play, and that fun factor increases tenfold when one plays with a partner. Imagine talking people to their deaths; it might sound unusual, but that’s the kind of range this game has.

?Stories hit way better when you are part of them!? Which is why I am a gamer first, writer second and a filmmaker as well. Being associated with movies has given me a very different perspective on gaming. Writing about video games has been on my mind for years and being an eSports writer at EssentiallySports gave me that chance.
