This unexpectedly excellent CRPG has given developer Larian Studios the top position amongst developers of role-playing games. Baldur’s Gate 3 is nothing new when it comes to very elaborate action RPGs.

But somehow this game made its way to the gaming crowd that was previously only interested in triple-A open-world games. And it blew up. The game became one of the year’s biggest success stories. It dominated Steam, and it also ended up winning Game of the year at TGA 2023.

Spider-Man 2

If you like the superhero genre, this one is for you. It’s not like people didn’t know Insomniac Games before they made the first Spider-Man back in 2018. After all, they had developed games like Ratchet and Clank, Resistance, and Sunset Overdrive. But Spider-Man really pushed them to new heights of popularity.

This title ended up being something of a massive success for them and Sony, for good reasons. And its spin-off, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, proved that the 2018 game was not just a fluke. Hence, the anticipation for Spider-Man 2 was high. It launched with an overwhelmingly positive critical response.

With a 90 on Metacritic, Spider-Man 2 is the perfect game for every fan of the friendly neighborhood superhero out there.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Nintendo does not make many direct sequels to their games. Fans appreciate this way of developing games. This approach simply means fans would get to see something new every time a new game is launched. But Tears of the Kingdom was even announced as a “sequel to Breath of the Wild.” With a working title like this and a game looking just like its predecessor, it’s only natural for fans to be worried. But it turns out Nintendo cannot go wrong even when they are creating a new game on a previously used map!

This game just blew everyone away. Nintendo introduced new gameplay mechanics, such as Ultrahand, Fuse, and Ascend. All of these abilities were Nintendo’s direct answer to the complaints of fans of the first game. Over that, an elaborate new story mode, almost three times the playfield, and much more. Nintendo somehow made a far better game than Breath of the Wild here.

Resident Evil 4 Remake

Capcom knows exactly what its fans want. At least in the case of the Resident Evil franchise. This developer publisher has yet to go wrong when it comes to releasing excellently made survival horror games. And they also know what game is considered their best achievement of all time. Hence, they took their time remaking Resident Evil 4. And they did an exceptional job with it too. They implemented their newly designed RE Engine for it. This ensured that it had a very photorealistic quality to it.

Over that, they added a bunch of small quality-of-life gameplay changes to it. Parrying, the ability to walk while shooting, and also being able to change the way some scenarios play out are some of those. It can be said without a doubt that every survival horror fan needs to play this game at least once.

Baldur’s Gate 3 made CRPGs a household name, and Elden Ring did the same thing for soul-like games. Gamers are now more than eager to try their hands at these excellently designed, hard-as-nails games. Suddenly dying again and again and trying the same level multiple times is not so bad. In such a climate, Lies of P had to prosper and prosper it did. This game takes most of its ideas from Bloodborne, yet somehow it stands on its own.

Its environment, its weapons, its art style, and its interconnected levels. Lies of P is a game that’s a must-have for every soulslike especially Bloodborne fans out there.

?Stories hit way better when you are part of them!? Which is why I am a gamer first, writer second and a filmmaker as well. Being associated with movies has given me a very different perspective on gaming. Writing about video games has been on my mind for years and being an eSports writer at EssentiallySports gave me that chance.
