Naughty Dog will introduce a brand new, rogue-like survival mode with No Return in The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered. For fans who have already completed the game almost four years ago, it will be something unique. The devs have tried to blend different gameplay variations to make it feel like a new experience altogether. Ahead of the release of The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, PS5 users need to be fully prepared. Especially for knowing everything regarding No Return.
A lot of players may be thinking about how to even unlock this mode in the first place. Do they have to finish the story or not to jump into this mode? This article will try to answer exactly that question.

Yes, that’s pretty much the simple answer. Players on PS5 don’t need to start the story mode and beat it to unlock the mode. “No Return will be playable as soon as you boot up The Last of Us Part II Remastered“, as per an official blog. Once players start The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, they will see the menu with certain options like ‘Story’, ‘Extras’, ‘Options’, and ‘Making of’. Among them is also ‘No Return’. Players have to simply select it and dive straight into the mode’s dedicated menu. There, they will find more options to choose from. Click on ‘New Run’. The latter will have three specific options according to how players want to explore the survival mode:

- Standard Run – Fight through a series of randomized combat encounters, ending up in a boss fight. If players die, all of their weapons and upgrades will be reset with a randomized map generated for every new run.
- Custom Run – Players can change the rules of No Return. They can alter the appearance of enemies and bosses they will face. Plus, preferred mods can be selected along with gambits, mechanics, and more. Also, Custom Runs won’t affect a player’s ability to complete challenges.
- Daily Run – Players can compete with others worldwide, thanks to a leaderboard. It keeps track of the user performance after each randomly generated run. The score will be shown on the leaderboard, where one can compare runtime fared against other players.
Moreover, there are four dedicated game modes in No Return that one can access. They all are listed below:

- Assault (Automatically unlocked)
- Capture (can be unlocked after playing 7 runs)
- Hunted (Automatically unlocked)
- Holdout (can be unlocked after playing 5 runs)
Now, newcomers who have no idea about The Last of Us series should play the campaign first to get a handle on gameplay. Those who have never experienced even the first part, alongside 2020’s sequel, can begin with the story mode. This way, they can adjust themselves to the overall combat style.
