Gedson Fernandes is the latest addition to the squad of Tottenham. Jose Mourinho has made his first signing for the club as this move from Benfica has been completed this transfer window. The new manager was appointed 2 months ago and has started the “Rebuild” of the team.
The 21 yr old played his first match for Benfica last season and his breakthrough attracted major clubs spontaneously. The Portuguese won the title Primeira Liga in his first-ever campaign as he scored twice in the Champions League.
The loan move for 18th months was completed when both Tottenham and Benfica agreed to the terms.
“It’s a hard story. My family, they came to London because in Portugal, work is very hard and it’s very difficult to find work,” said Fernandes.
The move was made easier by the fact that his family has already made the move to London. “They did not have a brilliant life but they have a good life here and this is one more motivation for me to be here today. They will help me to settle here.” Fernandes added.
The midfielder was linked with Manchester United and Chelsea and he signed with Tottenham amid these rumors. With the absence of Mousa Sissoko and Tanguay N’Dombele, Fernandes is set to make his debut soon enough.
Capped twice by Portugal, the youngster is looking forward to playing for the Premier League club. He was also part of the U-17 Portugal squad that won the Under 17 European Championship.
The club was excited by the signing and are hoping to get the player settled in the squad real quick. “We are delighted to announce that we have reached an agreement for the 18-month loan of Gedson Fernandes from Benfica with an option to make the transfer permanent.” Read the club statement.
They also added, “The midfielder will wear the number 30 shirt for the remainder of this season.”
Mourinho will look to find consistency with his performances as he strengthens his midfield. Adding depth to the squad might be the solution Tottenham needs right now.
