“Going to Try to Beat Her and to Take Some Revenge”: Belinda Bencic on Rivalry With Bianca Andreescu

Despite not playing a single match in 2020, Bianca Andreescu is still regarded highly by her peers. The Swiss number one Belinda Bencic also rates Andreescu high. Bencic is eagerly waiting for Andreescu’s return to restart her rivalry with the Canadian.
Speaking with Match Point Canada, Bencic appreciated Andreescu’s craft. Bencic gave an overview of Bianca’s style which not only involves pure hitting but also tactical masterclass.

“For sure, she is definitely a really talented and great player. She reads the game so well and she has a different game. She really feels the ball, she not just like a big hitter but also thinking a lot.”
Further, Bencic hopes that she and Bianca can create an exciting rivalry in tennis. She is also on the hunt for revenge for their clash at the 2019 US Open where Bianca dispatched her in straight sets.
“I definitely like her game style and it’s really challenging to playing her and hopefully, we can build something like a rivalry. The match in US open was really good I think, and I am definitely going to try to beat her and to take some revenge.”
En-route to her 2019 US Open triumph, Bianca Andreescu faced off against Belinda Bencic in the semifinals. Both of them were playing each other for the first time and the Canadian came out on top.

Bencic also engaged in a funny conversation about Bianca and her looking similar. She revealed that many people believe she and Bianca look very much alike and thus called them twins.
“Yeah I mean definitely can be and a lot of people also say we look alike. I don’t know if it’s true but many people say it so.”

All went downhill for Andreescu after her US Open victory. She suffered a knee injury at the 2019 WTA Finals. Having not recovered from the injury, she withdrew from the 2020 Australian Open.
But then, the pandemic struck, which delayed her return. Furthermore, no practice due to lockdown slowed her progress, and she was not able to reach match fitness. Due to that, she withdrew from the 2020 season.
Andreescu has her eyes set on the 2021 season. She is again hungry for victories and is looking to represent Canada at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Let’s see how well the seventh-ranked player does in 2021.
