Despite winning two Major Championships, John Daly seems to be in the news to a greater extent for his colorful nature and his off-the-field persona. His fanbase has increased over the years, and viewers seem to take notice of each and every move he takes, on and off the field. This has helped Daly in procuring major sponsorship deals in recent years, bringing in a stable flow of money for the 56-year-old. However, things weren’t rosy in his early days, and Daly decided to let it out during a chat show with TV host Graham Bensinger.

John Daly talks about his relationship with his parents

In the show, ‘Long John’ described his mother as an “angel” and a “shoulder to cry on.” “[The] relationship between me and my mom, my mom’s is like an angel. I mean, she just knew no matter how bad the problem was or what was going on.” he said.“ She just always had the right thing to say.”

Daly has maintained throughout his career that his upbringing was difficult, and his mother was his savior. His father, though, was abusive, as Daly told Bensinger. When asked about the “tough love” he received from his father, Daly didn’t hold back.

“I don’t know dad’s just different you know, he’s in his 80s now I don’t talk to him that much. I just…… there’s a kid and I think Jamie may have tested this too. He just hit us a lot for no reason, beat us up for no reason spanked us for no reason. Plenty of times he spanked us we needed to be spanked but a lot of them I didn’t understand why and I tried to deal with it for a long time.” he gloomily said. For the unversed, the Jamie being talked about here refers to Daly’s brother, Jamie Daly.

Is Daly’s relationship with his Father beyond repairable?

Furthermore, when asked if his relationship with his father was repairable, a hesitant John responded by saying he tried a number of times to mend with his father but failed. Daly was also quick to clarify that his father wasn’t the most evil person on the planet, citing he always made sure that his two sons had a place to play, whether it be golf or any other sport.

Daly went deeper into the conversation by saying he never could have a proper talk with his father. “Dad was very very difficult to talk to even as a kid, even when I won the PGA and we just never have had that bond,” he said.

However, Daly was hopeful the same doesn’t translate to the relationship between him and his son, John Daly II. Daly Jr., who recently signed a sponsorship deal with Hooters along with his father, is commonly seen accompanying his father on tours all over the world. When asked whether he was enjoying it, Daly had a funny reply. “So kids their age don’t really care. I think [they] want to know where the food is, with what’s next, where the movies are, hey can I get this game?” he signed off.
