On Saturday, Jason Day’s pursuit of a green jacket somewhat became a more distant dream. He not only shot 75-73-76 on the first three days of the tournament, but he also had to face severe backlash for his clothing from the netizens all across. So much so that even the Augusta National Authorities had to step in. After the backlash the Day got, one would have thought that he might have started resenting his sponsors, but as it turns out, that is not the case.

Jason Day didn’t seem bothered when questioned about the attention his attire was getting. He also dodged the idea of him not being able to perform well in baggy pants: “Tiger had baggier stuff on in the early 2000s. He did pretty good. I think it’s fine.” Day loves Malbon clothes and claims they are very comfortable: They’re very comfortable. It feels like I’ve got nothing on, really, to be honest.”

Although he finds his new clothing to be very comfortable, he has to adhere to Augusta National’s dress code. As a result, he decided to take off his vest without any hesitation when the ANGC’s officials asked him to do so. “Respectfully, you do that because it’s all about the tournament here, and I understand that. I respect the tournament. That’s what we’re here to do: try and play and win the green jacket,” Day stated.

Day did not seem to conflict with his sponsor, Malbon Golf, despite the attention being focused on his outfit. When Day was asked why he chose to wear what he wore, he said, I wasn’t trying to do anything. They just scripted me in it, and I was wearing it.” The golfer said that he is wearing on the course what he is asked to by the sponsors. He shared that all of his outfits for the tournament are pre-decided, hinting that for the final day also, fans would be in for a surprise!

This reply implies that Day is still focused on giving his best performance and isn’t too bothered by the criticism he receives from the public for his wardrobe choices. The golfer’s outfits must have cost a bit too much too, but that did not stop the criticism.

Day was already pushing towards overkill with his Thursday ensemble, which included loose-fitting black slacks and a clean white polo top. But Friday’s outfit raised the bar. Wearing an eye-catching white Malbon sweater vest with the words “Malbon Golf Championship” written across his chest, he came to finish his weather-delayed opening round. This is the outfit that caused the stir. On Saturday as well, he wore baggy pants that were referred to as “parachute pants” by fans.
