For the first time in history, the US Women’s Open was held at the iconic Pebble Beach. In fact, it was the first-time ever that the venue hosted a major in women’s golf. The 156-player field was competitive. The picturesqueness of the course also added to the event. But do you know that bringing the major to this course wouldn’t have been possible without this person?

Well, we are talking about Heidi Ueberroth, the co-chairperson at the Pebble Beach Company. Heidi not only helped women’s golf to have a major at Pebble Beach this year but also ensured there would be three more events here in the future, scheduled for the years 2035, 2040, and 2048. Named as one of the 100 Most Powerful People in Sports by Business Week, Heidi was also in the advertising sales department at ESPN. It was there that she learned about golf as she saw a colleague playing the sport. This eventually piqued her interest in the sport and before long she too started playing.

Heidi Ueberroth’s connection with Pebble Beach

Peter Ueberroth, Heidi’s father, and a former MLB commissioner, bought the Pebble Beach Company together with Clint Eastwood and Arnold Palmer in 1999. Prior to being elected co-chairperson, Heidi also served on the board for a long time.

She spoke to Golf Week on Sunday and shared what she thought about the state of women’s sports at present, including women’s golf. “I’ve been in the sports business for 30 years with a number of different sports, actually. This is by far the best time I’ve seen in women’s sports, women’s golf and women’s sports. Leading businesses and companies, really big brand names, media companies, really starting to dive in,” she said.
