Will the golfers who left for LIV Golf have a path back to the PGA Tour? This is but one of the many questions that arise when one thinks of the future of the sport. Interestingly, Webb Simpson, a player director of the PGA Tour’s Policy Board, has an answer to that query, and it was a surprising ‘Yes’. However, there was a twist to the same.

The 38-year-old took to an interview with Golfweek to answer questions about the potential merger that the Jay Monahan-led circuit is set to have with the Saudi-backed league. However, while doing so, he went ahead to dub just six of the athletes in the breakaway league as desirable, thereby invoking the wrath of the community as a result.

“What we’re really talking about is probably six players (who will be desirable to the Tour),” said Webb Simpson during the Q&A as he talked about the potential return of players to the same. Adding on, he stated that “the rest will have to go to Q-school” before going ahead to continue, “or if they want to do something, on the DP World Tour.”

Nonetheless, the statement did not sit well with many in the community. A tweet was shared by LIV Golf Enthusiast on their X handle a while back responding to the announcement of sorts made by the PGA Tour Pro. The post went ahead to dub the whole idea set forth by the 1-time major champ as nothing short of “fantasy/fan fiction of a merger.”

That’s not all. The update on its social media handle also went ahead to term the whole concept that was put forward by the 7-time PGA Tour champ as “flight of fancy,”  “fairy tale,” and so forth. “I find this incredibly funny,” added the tweet before going ahead to ask why the golfers were believing “these wild yarns” that were spun against the Saudi-backed circuit.

Meanwhile, this wasn’t the only reaction that came as a result of Simpson’s bold statement. The tweet went ahead to blow up on the internet, causing many in the community to go crazy over the professional for his “incredibly funny” idea.

Simpson’s worrisome claim leaves the internet in a rage

The 38-year-old wouldn’t have imagined such a response to his claims, which he made during the interview. There were a lot of people who stood up against the golfer with reactions that ranged from those questioning his talent to outright expressing their preference for LIV Golf over the PGA Tour. Let’s take a quick look at some of them.

Some followers took to questioning his skills on the greens. Moreover, they also compared him to the so-called “six players,” whom he deemed the best in the Saudi-backed league, all the while issuing a jab at the athlete for using the belly putter that the likes of Tiger Woods and Co. aim to ban.

Meanwhile, another enthusiast took to his X handle to voice his preference for the sport of golf. Be it the reason of having less or more talent on either circuit or for boasting a better format, they went ahead to advocate watching the PIF-funded circuit instead of the Monahan-led Tour.

Another fan of the Greg Norman-led circuit. However, this time around, they went and adopted a hilarious reply. The follower took to his social media profile to issue a reply to Simpson, mentioning how it would only happen in his dream, albeit in a funnier manner.

There were a lot of responses talking about the gameplay of the PGA Tour Pro. One of them went ahead to divulge their thoughts about how he would not be able to top the leaderboard in the current LIV Golf league’s field while taking a prod at his level of skills.

There were some fans who were not at all happy with the claims made by the athlete. They took to their X handles to aggressively admonish the golfer for his statement, all the while questioning his talent as a professional golfer.
