The anticipation, the thrill, and the twists are what make golf a beloved sport. Fans stay glued to the screens, watching every moment closely and not daring to turn away. In the blink of an eye, one could miss a bogey or a birdie and miss the moment where the whole game changed. On the Sunday of the PGA Championship week in 2021, that’s exactly how the mother of golf legend, Phil Mickelson felt.

Mary once told the press that as she had her eyes glued to the screen to watch her two sons on the course that day. She even had to put away her landline because it kept constantly ringing.

Mary refused to be distracted

In May 2021, Phil Mickelson competed in the PGA Championship. His brother, Tim, caddied alongside him that week and turned out to be just the good luck charm Mickelson needed. The golf legend won the major, becoming the oldest man in golf to ever do so. While his brother watched him play from a few yards behind, his parents, Mary and Phil Sr., watched the game on television.

The game was special to Phil’s parents because this was the first time both their sons were on the course of a major championship together. The landline in their house was blowing up that day. Mary couldn’t take it any longer. She put the phone in the other room and let the answering machine get the rest of the calls. “You don’t want to miss a shot or what they’re saying on TV,” she explained in an interview.

Mary didn’t mind talking on the phone, but she had the game on her mind that day. And she refused to miss a single shot. She said she didn’t know how long the calls would take, so she decided not to tempt fate. “It’s great to hear from people you haven’t heard from in years, but you don’t know if it’s going to be a minute or something long,” she said.

She immediately texted her daughter, Tina, and wrote, “Tina, text Philip and tell him just to par in… He won’t listen to his mother.” But Phil was on a roll that day. While his parent and sister rooted for him from their own homes, he tore up the course with his brother holding his bag. His mother was right though, because Phil ended the last hole on par, winning by two strokes.
